This gallery holds a mix of life drawing and portraiture. Some are reworked with experimentation of style and media, while others are a work-in-progress.
I was once told that seeing, and understanding, the form, proportion and structure of a human figure, is fundamental to relating to, and interpreting, our perception of the world. Just as Leonardo Da Vinci believed the workings of the human body to be an analogy of the workings of the universe, I apply these principles to my drawing; anything from still life and architecture to nature and people's faces.
I've had a passion for drawing people since the age of 11, when I did a portrait of my grandmother, just for fun. My eye for detail wasn't appreciated though because I showed too many wrinkles...
Drawing portraits requires a fine balance of close observation, flow of form, and empathy of the subject. Otherwise, the outcome risks becoming simply a drawing of facts rather than the emotion, or the pure essence of the person beneath.
I enjoy drawing the elderly; their faces hint of the underlying layers and fabrics of a textured life
