Research: Art & Dementia

Everyone was blown away by the outcomes. The effect on their wellbeing was profound.

There is a growing body of research evidence on the connections between art and health and wellbeing, but I have known all my life about the "feel good" effects of art making, and especially drawing.

After witnessing both of my parents' heartbreaking transition into aged care, I knew there was more that could be done to improve the quality of life for the elderly. So I began a PhD project to study the potential of drawing as a healthy endeavour for people living with dementia.

My research was one of the first to study the potential of drawing apps and their usability for people living with a range of cognitive and physical abilities

Following this research, I designed and developed the Drawing Memories Program, tailoring activities to support a wide range of abilities. The program was implemented over 12 weeks across two aged care facilities, where the impact on participants’ wellbeing was profound.

The work has been presented at national and international conferences, and featured through organisations including Dementia Australia and SBS Radio.

There is a growing need for continued research into how the arts can support people living with dementia and other cognitive or physical challenges.

If you’re interested in collaborating or supporting future research, you’re very welcome to get in touch.
